- by Gerd Korman

- [This book is written by a distinguished professor emeritus of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) at Cornell University].
- Fleeing the Nazis in the months before World War II, the Korman family scattered from a Polish refugee camp. The father sailed to Cuba on the ill-fated St. Louis; the mother left for the United States via Italy after sending her two sons on a Kindertransport. One of the sons was Gerd Korman, whose memoir traces his own pathfrom the familys deportation from Hamburg to their reunited life in New York City.
- Gerd Korman is a professor emeritus of American History at Cornell Universitys School of Industrial and Labor Relations. His books include the prize-winning Industrialization, Immigrants, and Americanizers and several works that established him as an early student of the Holocaust, including the anthology Hunter and Hunted.
- Professor Korman was invited to have a "conversation" about the book at the Center for Jewish History on the evening of 23 January 2006.

- "Debriefing Samuel Bacharach: Sharpen Your Political Competence"
- Summary:
- Political competence is often equated with Machiavellianism, but Samuel Bacharach, director of Cornell University's Institute for Workplace Studies, defines this concept in far more positive terms. For Bacharach, it is simply part of being an effective manager. He argues that mastering political competence is a three-step process: (1) mapping your terrain to determine your stakeholders' goals, and how your goals will be received, (2) assembling a coalitiona politically mobilized collection of individuals committed to implementing your idea because doing so will generate benefits they value, and (3) getting things done through coalition members who will network with others in your organization to propagate your ideas and translate your message to inspire further action. Read on to learn how to achieve this competenceand how to avoid the complacency that can threaten it.
