Editor's Note about GOOGLEBOMBS -- see -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_bomb

That search engines can be manipulated is common knowledge. When they are made to express political statements, these public utilities lose their charm regardless of whether the intent is humorous or not.
One example is the following:  Go to Google and enter the word FAILURE. The first result will be a link to GEORGE BUSH.
This result was still evident at 10:25 this morning (August 11, 2006).  See link at -- http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=failure

One will either laugh or be incensed. From an information perspective, however, this entire concept is troubling.

Google's response at http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/09/googlebombing-failure.html
only makes the situation worse. It indicates that groups or teams of people can (and will) distort facts, results, and ultimately confidence in what is perceived to be a public utility.
